10 Best Summer Party Songs
Hot bikini girls
We were rocking out to M.I.A‘s “XXXO” featuring Jay-Z the other day, and it got us thinking about what other kinds of summer jams we could groove to at our next beach party. Katy Perry‘s “California Gurls” featuring Snoop Dogg is an obvious choice, but for those who might not be into cupcake bras, Radio.com’s Top 10 has dug up the 10 Best Summer Party Songs. They include all kinds of fancy footwork from ’80s nostalgia groups ( The Go-Go‘s, Bananarama) to bands with a modern pop-rock beach twist (Vampire Weekend, MGMT). And, if that’s not enough to get your beach party rocking, we can’t say we didn’t try.
10. Bananarama – “Cruel Summer”
We’ve all had our share of cruel summers, and what better song to comfort you under melancholy times this very poppy and infectious dance track from the ’80s.
9. MGMT - “Electric Feel”
With styles ranging from caffeinated electronic-pop to psychedelic-rock moments, one can always find cheer in MGMT especially in the song “Electric Feel” which makes us feel, well–very electric.
8. Vampire Weekend – “Horchata”
It’s not summer if you’re not holding a summer-themed drink like “Horchata!” As heard on their sophomore effort Contra, this summer pop song is altogether fresh and joyous (just like the drink itself!).
7. LCD Soundsystem – “Drunk Girls”
With humorous lyrics like “drunk girls wait an hour to pee,” and “drunk boys, we walk like pedestrians” there’s a possibility you might want to adventure outside to prove the contrary. Though, we’d like to encourage you to play outside responsibly!
6. Radiohead - “High and Dry”
This is specifically for the nostalgic who just want to hermit inside and cozy up to the warm sounds and fragile vocals of Thome Yorke. “High and Dry” was the first single released from their second album, The Bends (1995).
5. New Young Pony Club – “Ice Cream”
Quirky, swirly, and delightfully coy, the members of New Young Pony Club serve up an electronically flavored blend of minimal guitars and sexual innuendo. If that’s not enough flavor to push you outside, then we highly suggest you consider Door Number 4.
4. The Go-Go‘s – “Vacation”
With all those smiling skies outside and long weekends still fresh in our heads, we couldn’t help but also add a timeless track by the Go-Go’s to remind us to take vacation if we haven’t. If you’re in need of a break, bust out your swim wear and head out to the beach because “Vacation all I ever wanted, Vacation had to get away…”
3. Justice - “D.A.N.C.E.”
If there’s one thing you can count on Justice to do for you, it’s making you “D.A.N.C.E.” From the release †, alternatively known as Cross, the sounds produced by this French duo pop with hipster-tastic techno fire. Perfect for any outdoor summer fun!
2. B-52s - “Rocklobster”
If there’s one song on the planet we’d like to have on our side while sunbathing under the hot sun, it’s “Rocklobster!”
1. Beach Boys – “California Girls”
If there’s any band out there in the music world that knew how to party all summer long, it’s Wilson’s crew (well, maybe back in the day–beach style!) Never appearing as more than suave and savvy surf bums, the Boys harmonic feats always seemed to get the girls. So, grab your favorite pair of beach shorts, and “Wipe-out”!

Album Review: Bret Michaels – Custom Built
I was just a little too young and suburban to be a big-haired Poison fan in the late ’80s and early ’90s, so my admittedly imbalanced opinion of Bret Michaels is primarily based on unfortunate clips of Rock of Love and The Apprentice 3 from The Soup. So, of course, I jumped at the chance to review Custom Built, his latest solo album, as I was sure it would be a train wreck.
Though the target audience seems to be hot messes, strippers, and the men who love them, Michaels’ latest effort is still mildly likeable. However, calling it a true effort might be a stretch, as only a handful of the 12 tracks are truly new to listeners.
To my extreme surprise, I actually found a few of the tracks to be worth a second listen, including “Nothing To Lose”. The album features two versions, one with harmonies by unlikely collaborator Miley Cyrus. Though it’s slightly disturbing to imagine the two crooning to each other, once you get past that, it’s actually a catchy ballad. Actually, the solo version, which leaves the teen pop tart at the mall, holds up on its own.
Moving on, “Open Road” is a summer anthem for biker buds and babes who are “young, wild, and free,” also included on Michaels’ 2005 solo album. A countrified version of “Every Rose”, featuring Brad Arnold of Three Doors Down and country artists Chris Cagle and Mark Wills, provides a welcome update to the Poison classic. And though Bradley Nowell might be howling in his grave, the cover of Sublime’s “What I Got” actually stays pretty true to the original, with just a few “huhs” and “oh yeahs” thrown in.
However, most of the album focuses on dirty, sexy, bad romances and one-night stands, with often eye-rolling lyrics, such as those in “I’d Die For You”:
I am love, you are hate
You are laughter, I am rage
My love is forever, my heart is true
You live for me, I’d die for you
(Oh yeah, rock it baby)
“Riding Against the Wind”, the theme to Michaels’ upcoming Life as I Know It reality show, kicks off the album, which leads one to believe that this attempt was released only to draw attention to his latest VH1 venture. There are also new mixes of the previously released “Driven” and the Rock of Love theme “Go That Far”, which could never be anything other than a theme song.
In sum, Custom Built as a whole is forgettable summer music, as it’s scarce on new music and can’t stand up to the test of time. But, on the plus side, you can pull some of the tracks to add to your “Skeezy Rock” playlist, chopper tunes, and pole dancing repertoire.

Album review: Tom Jones, 'Praise & Blame'
Ever since Johnny Cash started making sparse, acoustic recordings with producer Rick Rubin in the early ‘90s, a cottage industry has been created around recording the grand old men (and women) of popular music in more organic settings. In the last decade or so, we’ve had back-to-basics records by Loretta Lynn, Neil Diamond, Bettye LaVette, Tony Joe White, Gil Scott-Heron, Robert Plant and countless others. The notion behind many of these is to reposition the voice and persona in a more age-appropriate setting, with low-key instrumentation and songs that focus on mortality and the afterlife. When these albums work, they make the seemingly past-their-prime artists newly relevant.
The latest and perhaps most unlikely of these efforts is “Praise & Blame” (Lost Highway) from Tom Jones – yes, the burly Welsh pop singer who once asked the musical questions “Why, why, why Delilah?” and “What’s new, Pussycat?” while women flung their underwear at him. Jones is what used to be known as a “belter,” the kind of hunky crooner who roared, often with a knowing wink. The sweat, smirks and testosterone may have been running amok, but Jones always implied he was in on the joke. When he reinvented himself in the late ‘80s, he fashioned a comeback by applying his robust voice and playful attitude to contemporary songs – encapsulated by his cover of Prince’s “Kiss”; the perfect title of his 1994 album, “The Lead and How to Swing It”; and a feisty collection of duets, “Reload” (1999).
But with “Praise & Blame” Jones dials down the camp and tries to act his age – he turned 70 in June. So what we get is a more refined, more serious Jones, and that’s no fun at all. One record-company executive dismissed the album as a “sick joke,” but were it only true. Jones plays it as straight as he ever has on a collection of blues and gospel covers, his beefy vocals reduced to a melancholy foghorn on Bob Dylan’s “What Good Am I?” He sounds almost ready to cry on “Did Trouble Me,” with a sad, little banjo plucking away, and he slogs his way through “If I Give My Soul” as if serving penance. How much of a hoot might it have been had he taken on the old blues standard “Nobody’s Fault But Mine” with Led Zeppelin-style bravado? Instead he sounds tethered to a ball and chain.
It’s telling that Jones covers the standard “Ain’t No Grave,” the title song of Cash’s 2009 album. The two versions share little in common – whereas Cash knew he was dying when he recorded his version, and sang with weathered dignity, Jones plays it smoother, lighter and less persuasively. He’s best when producer Ethan Johns (who has worked with Kings of Leon) lets him cut loose on John Lee Hooker’s “Burning Hell” and the Staple Singers’ “Don’t Knock.”
Don’t let the white-haired visage fool you -- there’s plenty of moxie left in Jones’ voice. But there’s too much reverence and not enough Delilah on most of “Praise & Blame.”

Review: Rick Ross continues to show he's a true 'bawwsss' on new album 'Teflon Don'
Rick Ross
"Teflon Don" (Maybach Music Group/Def Jam)
On Rick Ross' latest album "Teflon Don," the burly, bearded Miami rapper continues to live up to his catch phrase, "I'm a bawwsss!"
Ross might not be the most lyrical rapper, but his shoot-from-the-hip approach makes his fourth album an entertaining one. From beginning to the end, Ross provides a disc filled with quality tunes that'll leave listeners satisfied. Despite having so many collaborations — from Trey Songz to Diddy — Ross is the top boss on this record.
Ross holds his own against some of hip-hop's bests, such as Jay-Z and Kanye West. But on the J.U.S.T.I.C.E League-produced "Maybach Music III" featuring T.I., Jadakiss and Erykah Badu, Ross is clearly outdone by T.I., who might have the best verse on the album.
However, don't hold being upstaged on one track against Ross. He shows there's more to him than rapping about luxury cars and his large stash of cash. There's depth on "All The Money In The World" with Raphael Saadiq, as he raps about the death of his father, who died more than 10 years ago from liver cancer.
Ross also teams up with Cee-Lo on the soulful "Tears of Joy," which opens with a short clip of a speech from Black Panther leader Bobby Seale.
Some of the tracks that'll make you want to press repeat are his first single "Super High," featuring Ne-Yo, "Free Mason," featuring Jay-Z and John Legend, and the easy-riding "Aston Martin Music," featuring Drake and Chrisette Michelle.
CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: On "B.M.F. (Blowin' Money Fast)" featuring Styles P, Lex Luger produces a hard-thumping beat that meshes perfectly with the husky voice of Ross.

Album review: Sheryl Crow, "100 Miles From Memphis"
A number of pop and rock singers, from Shelby Lynne to Elvis Costello, have tried their hand at making soul or soul-inspired records. Sheryl Crow's "100 Miles From Memphis," the latest entry in this crossover sweepstakes, is a sincere but mixed effort that works as often as it doesn't.
Among the album's shortcomings is "I Want You Back," a set-closing cover of the epochal Jackson 5 hit worked up on the spot after Crow and company had finished a take of an obscure Marvin Gaye track that didn't make it onto the record.
The performance is spirited, with Crow's vocals often resembling those of a prepubescent Michael Jackson. But it's also utterly lacking in imagination, so derivative of the Motown original as to leave the listener wondering why, other than for sentimental reasons, it's on the album.
Much better are "Eye to Eye," a sinewy, reggae-inflected vamp featuring Keith Richards on guitar, and "Sign Your Name," a slinky, Stax-inspired cover of the Terence Trent D'Arby hit, with Memphian Justin Timberlake on backing vocals.
As the album's title suggests, the music of Memphis inspired the project (Crow grew up 100 miles away in Kennett, Mo.), with David Campbell's tensile string arrangements recalling those that producer Willie Mitchell wrote for the vintage hits of Ann Peebles, Al Green and others.
Nods to Sly Stone and '70s funk and gospel are here as well, but too much of the back half of the disc consists of distended pop-rock ballads, slackening its otherwise taut concept and groove.
